THE ODYSSEY - CHAPTER ONE HINTS

Remember, half the fun of the Odyssey is the challenge of using all your Civ2 Skills to assist in overcoming each obstacle. That said, it's better to use this file as an aid than to quit in frustration!

******************************************************************************************

Troy:

1) The Trojan Horse is a spy (actually 5 of them) Sometimes spies get caught, and if you lose every horse (no nuke), just restart. This is rare, but it CAN happen.

2) You can explore the area around Troy if you want, but there's no point. Head for Ismarus right away.

3) If nothing works, you probably didn't run the Odyssey.bat program before starting! (Be sure to select "1").

******************************************************************************************

Ismarus:

1) The nearby encampment is an Airbase, and your Sailors all have paratroop capability. Land them all at the camp and next turn "jump" them to an open space next to Ismarus. You should be able to conquer the city while losing only one or two men.

2) Keep your ship near Ismarus. If it wanders back down near Troy, it will be cut off when you capture Ismarus.

3) After taking the city, bring in the ship and evacuate every sailor you can. The damaged guy with no movement points on the outskirts of the city? He's already dead, but just doesn't know it yet!

4) Don't forget to pick up the new "Wine of Ismarus" unit which appeared in the encampment!

******************************************************************************************

Jebara:

1) Odysseus has Marine capability, so he must assault the city.

2) Use Eurylochus to capture the empty city (it will be destroyed). In the same turn, he can also kill the Lotus plant on the island.

3) It is critical that SOMEBODY kill the "Ocean Lotus", because that generates Polites. You cannot win without him. He represents one of the drugged sailors who doesn't want to leave the island, but has a far more important mission later on.

4) If you only lost one sailor while conquering Ismarus (unlikely, but possible), you now won't have enough room on the ship for everybody! Leave one of the sailors behind and fortify him. and forget he exists, because you'll never pass that way again!

******************************************************************************************

Goat Island/Cyclops:

1) Odysseus has Marine capability, so he must kill the first goat. This generates an Itrhacan goat, who conveniently illuminates your target....a cave on the next island. There is another "green" goat on this island, but killing him is not necessary.

2) Leave everyone on Goat Island except Odysseus, the Wine, and two Sailors. They will travel to the cave (a gap in the mist will appear on the next turn). Odysseus must kill the "yellow" Goat, which allows the 2 sailors and the Wine unit to land. DO NOT allow Odysseus to leave the ship!!!

3) On the next turn, one of the sailors must attack the cave. Cyclops is hiding in the cave and will kill him. Next, use the Wine unit to kill Cyclops. Optional: If the remaining sailor attacks the Cave, he can kill it easily and that will create an extra Sailor back on Goat Island.

4) On the next turn, the Blind Cyclops will attack and kill the Wine unit. If it was VERY heavily damaged, the Sailor might defend and die instead. Either way, evacuate the remaining unit, kill the rocks, pick up your remaining units, and sail north.

5) The Cyclops will "get your goat" within a turn or two, but that's supposed to happen.

******************************************************************************************

Palace of Aeolus:

1) Don't forget to collect your "Bag of Winds" unit before heading off to Ithaca!

2) Do not attack the Palace!

******************************************************************************************

Island near Ithaca:

1) Odysseus must attack and kill the Message unit.

2) Bag of Winds must attack "Greed". Yes, you could wait a turn and kill Greed with Odysseus, but there's nothing else you can use the "Wind" unit for, and it definitely violates the storyline!

******************************************************************************************

Laestrygonia:

1) You must save Odysseus, Eurylochus, & Polites. You can probably save one Sailor too, but that's not as important. The best way to do this is to unload these four on square 31,47 or 29,45. Having five units is even better. Both squares are invisible forts, so only one unit will die if the stack is attacked.

2) Next turn pick them up with the new ship (which should already be holding the 4 new "Sailor Marine" units) and RUN! One of the Laestrygon units has bomber capability, and it WILL take your ship if given a chance.

******************************************************************************************

Circe's Palace #1:

1) Eurylochus should travel up the river, attack the "Food and Drink" unit, and die. If he doesn't, you'll wind up with two Eurylochus units, and that's just messy!

2) Odysseus must land on the mountain and attack "Hermes". This will generate the "Potion" unit. It is an air-missile unit with a move of two.

3) Potion Unit "tricks"
- Polites is a "land-sub", and the only unit capable of carrying the Potion.
- Move Polites first and the potion second, except when.....
- Using the Potion unit to open a path through the Zones of Control.
- The Potion must ALWAYS end its turn on the same square as Polites, except when...
- Odysseus, Polites, and the Potion are all standing on square 45,37
- Then and only then may you attack the City with the Potion unit.

4) After Odysseus conquers the city, you must wait until the next phase is complete. Do NOT kill the "blue" Circe unit that blocks your return to the ship!

******************************************************************************************

Shade of Odysseus:

1) The "Shade of Odysseus" is a helicopter. That means he must go west as quickly as possible because it loses "health" every turn.

2) In the far west are the Gates of Hades. Attack that unit.

******************************************************************************************

Circe's Palace #2:

1) Several blocking units will now have disappeared, so move the ship up to square 42,38 and disembark a unit onto square 44,38. This defeats the ZOC problem and will allow all your units to move toward and board the ship.

2) Yes it's a city, and yes you own it. But do NOT leave any units behind to guard it!

2) Move south, kill the message unit, and complete Chapter 1:
- Save game as "ODY1.sav"
- Exit out of Civ2
- Run the Odyssey.bat file and select "2"
- Restart Civ2
